Whether one is reminded of the Three Musketeers, the Three Amigos or Daryl, Daryl and Daryl from the old Newhart show, when talking to the three Gylytiuk brothers of Bolt Security Systems you are definitely provided with the impression that family participation and values matter most when it comes to customer and employee relations.

One of the Gylytiuk brothers, Brian, still runs into people within the alarm industry that find it hard to believe that three brothers in Edmonton can get along so well in business. Add to this family puzzle a niece, Katherine, an administrative assistant, and a nephew, Nicholas, an installer and technician, and what one has is a family organization that rivals the Walton family of 1950 television fame. (As well, brother Ernie and nephew Terry own their own security company, A-Tech Security Systems, in British Columbia.)

“Our philosophy,” Brian says, “is that we don’t always have to agree. We are no different to any other business situation where there are disputes and arguments, but at the end of the day, we can resolve that very quickly then go and have a beet together with no hard feelings.”

Bolt’s success and the ability of all three brothers to work under one roof can be attributed to the fact that each one brings different skills and knowledge to the table. Prior to the alarm business, each one of them worked more than 10 years at a major corporation: Brian gained human resource experience with Safeway; Bob, Brian’s twin, learner business control and financial operations with Imperial Oil; and Gary, the youngest of the three, is a chartered accountant, who honed his skills at Chevron.

Originally, it was Brian and Gary who launched a career in the alarm industry when they helped Bolt Security Systems, an alarm company that was originally based in Eastern Canada, with its business and dealer set up. They eventually obtained the Western Canada rights for Bolt Security and began their own business while assisting the eastern operation. In 1987 the two brothers bought the Canadian rights to Bolt Security Systems and to this day continue to focus their attention on activities in the west – from Northern Alberta to Lethbridge. (The eastern operation has continued as a separate entity.) In addition to Bolt’s primary location in Edmonton, it is also in the midst of developing satellite operations in Red Deer and Grand Prairie.

Regardless of the location, the primary focus of Bolt’s operation is the design and installation of security systems, with monitoring being farmed out to a third party central station.

“Our philosophy,” notes Gary “has been to give our customers the best quality installation and product and best possible service, so we have chosen to focus our core business in doing exactly that. We feel that by having the option of using a choice of two or three different (monitoring) stations, we can give the best to our customer. If for some reason they are unhappy with the monitoring side of the service, we can then move them to a different station that we have faith in.”

This fits in with Bolt’s approach of not being a cookie cutter operation, but more of a custom design company that educates the customer and designs each system to fit his or her specific needs.

“Basically, we want to portray to our customers that Bolt is a family run operation with morals and ethics that give our customers value for their money”, expresses Brian. “We design systems for our customers as if they were for our own house and we will only sell equipment to these customers that we will put into our homes as well. We want to service our customers within a reasonable time frame as well, so that the customers have no down time on their security systems. The customers always have to be number one because without customers, we have no business.”

One would think that with such a strong family organization, noon-family employees would feel like a fifth wheel but that could not be further from the truth. And just like Bolt exemplifies a family atmosphere when dealing with customers, it takes a similar approach when it comes to its employees.

“Yes, it’s definitely family oriented, whether you are part of the family or not,” notes Brandi Hogue, Bolt’s executive assistant. She feels this develops a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, without high-pressure sales tactics, when clients come in, which is a definite asset to the company’s ability to build a client base within Northern Alberta.

Besides operating a company with a huge focus on customer service, Bolt prides itself on keeping pace with all of today’s security technology advancements. The Gylytiuk brothers feel strongly about maintaining technical expertise in their company and do not shy away from investing money in maintaining a high standard of technical knowledge amongst its employees.

An example of Bolt’s progressive philosophy to security technology can be seen in its hiring of Tony Sampson in August 2002, as its technical manager. A graduate of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Sampson has assisted Bolt in developing the company’s migration into higher-end security installations and applications, such as access control and CCTV.

“We’re really starting to look into (installing) IP camera systems so we can work on the backbone of a network inside a business, rather than have to run all new wiring, which we find really curbs cabling, as well as labor costs,” explains Sampson, who also feels very strongly about Bolts’ family connection. “You feel like family here. I really felt that these people had good credentials. I felt that they were honest and I saw their vision of what they wanted to do and I felt like I wanted to be a part of that and I wanted to grow with that.”

With a strong presence in Northern Alberta and expansion into the Kelowna and BC marrket place, it definitely appears that the family atmosphere hovering over Bolt is working.

“We can honestly say that probably 80 to 90 percent of our business is word of mouth referrals and that is very important to us,” proudly says Brian. “That tells us we’re doing something good in the industry, and that we have consumers out there who believe in our product, our company, our administration and our service.”

1. Keep all doors and windows locked.
2. It's important to use a high quality deadbolt lock on your doors and to use an additional blocking device on sliding glass doors. Windows are often much less attended to than doors, so check them throughout your home routinely.
3. Install drapes or blinds on all lower level windows and doors, including the garage. Most burglaries actually occur during the middle of the day, so keeping your possessions and cars hidden from intruders is important.
4. Install flood lights or sensor lights on the exterior of the home and keep lights on inside the home as well. Burglars are far less likely to enter a well-lit residence.
5. Keep a well-manicured lawn. This can emphasize that you pay close attention to your home, whereas an overgrown lawn can suggest vacancy to a possible burglar.
6. When travelling, make sure you have someone checking on the house collecting your mail and newspapers; a pile of papers on the driveway is a tell-tale sign that your family is away.
7. Install an alarm system. Make sure all household members are trained properly in working the alarm and use it daily; a top-notch security system is useless if it isn't used or is used improperly. Also, post stickers on the exterior of the home and have a yard sign indicating your alarm service and that will often scare off possible intruders.
8. To insure that your alarm will not be disabled if your phone line is cut, have a Cell Unit installed as a backup to your system.
9. It is a good idea to have 2 - 3 smoke detectors wired into your alarm system. Have them on each level of your home. A monitored smoke detector will notify the fire station as well as yourself if they are activated.
10. Get to know your neighbours. Your neighbours are often the first ones to notice when something doesn't "look right" at your home. Studies have proven that once your neighbours feel like they know you, they are more likely to notify the police if they notice strange behaviour at your home.
